Dominique Stearns failed to return a book she checked out two or three weeks ago from her school’s library.

She had a brand-new dress and a shiny pair of shoes, but it was her overdue library book that kept a Florida teen from attending her high school homecoming dance.

The school banned Dominique Stearns, a freshman at Cypress Lake High School in Fort Meyers, Fla., from the dance after it discovered she had forgotten to return the book to the library.

Dominique Stearns failed to return a book she checked out two or three weeks ago from her school’s library.“She’s not being punished because she got into a fight or anything like that,” her mother Danielle Olmstead told Fox 4 News. “She’s getting punished because she had an overdue library book. For reading. It’s ridiculous.”

Dominique, who’s in the school’s accelerated reading program, checked the book out about 2 or 3 weeks ago, but says she was never told a return date. No dates are stamped on the book’s inside jacket. She offered to return the book right away, but says the school refused to change its mind.

“They’re pathetic,” she told the station. “And they need to worry about more serious things.”
